Updating the Find My Device app for Android

Context

When I joined the Find My Device team as the only designer in 2021, there were a few glaring issues that needed to be fixed before we moved on to future features.

  1. The device picker was embedded in the map view, meaning the app would always start locating a device without user input.

  2. We needed to support a growing number of supported devices and device types.

  3. The visual style of the app was a few years old and needed to be updated to Material You standards.

Redesign

New home screen

I solved the first two problems by designing a new home screen that would show a list of all devices associated with the user.

The user now has to explicitly choose which device the app should locate.

The vertical list better supports longer lists of devices.
